Dents and damage to a car are extremely frustrating and whilst minor knocks and bumps will have no impact whatsoever on the performance of the vehicle, any car dent should be repaired immediately. Many of us are tempted to ignore minor dents, especially if it is not particularly noticeable – the thought of the inconvenience and the cost of taking the car to the local garage can be off-putting and although ignoring a dent may appear to be the best money saving solution, it could end up costing more in the long term.
A dent in a car can occur easily, in some cases the owner may not even be aware of as to how the damage occurred in the first place. Sometimes cars are dented by other cars or objects whilst parked and unoccupied – returning to the car following a quick trip to the local supermarket can be extremely frustrating for the owner.
Types Of Dents
- Creased dents typically occur when an object such as a tree branch, comes into contact with the car and is dragged along.
- Sharp dents are usually caused by the impact of a hard or sharp object – common examples include a stone hitting the car whilst in motion, or by another parked driver opening their car door into yours with force.
- Round dents are generally caused by larger round objects, a football being kicked at the car is a frequently occurring example.
- Severe dents occur during collisions with other vehicles or objects – the size and shape of this type of dent will vary depending on the impact.
Why Is It Important To Repair Dents Immediately?
Rust
One of the main issues caused by dents aside from the potential structural damage to the bodywork, is rust. Dents can cause damage, cracks and blemishes to the paintwork. The paintwork is not merely for aesthetic purposes, it serves to protect the metal bodywork of the car and during the impact that caused the dent, cracks to the paintwork may occur leaving areas of the metal bodywork exposed. When moisture comes into contact with this metal, it oxidises and turns into rust spots. Therefore, even if the size of the dent was initially very small, if moisture is able to penetrate rust will eventually form and the damage will become more prominent and costly to repair.
Reduces The Value Of The Car
Scratches and dents lower the value of the car, they reduce the aesthetic appeal and may prompt any potential buyers into believing that the vehicle was not properly looked after; when shopping for a second-hand car, most buyers are typically looking for aesthetics as well as performance.
Wear and Tear
Dents and cracks worsen with wear and tear due to exposure to the elements; rain, sun, wind and temperature alterations will all take their toll and lead to long-term damage to the paintwork.
Cost Effective
It is always cheaper to have repair works carried out immediately following damage, as it will only be the initial damage that needs to be repaired. The longer the dent is left, the more likely it is to develop further issues such as rust in addition to the original dent.
Safety
Some larger dents and damage could compromise the safety of the vehicle if the structural safety system has been damaged.
