What Is A Coolant Flush?
For optimal performance and to prevent the engine from overheating, car engines are required to operate within a specific temperature range - this is regulated by the radiator system and its coolant fluid. Coolant is a type of lubricant made up of antifreeze, water and a number of additives that prevent the engine from freezing, overheating and corroding.
In most vehicles, the cooling system is sealed and generally only checked during services. However, in some cases, issues with the cooling system may indicate that a coolant flush is needed in between services.
What Are The Signs My Car Needs A Coolant Flush?
Dashboard Warning Light
Newer cars will alert drivers to any problem with coolant levels with a dashboard warning light; if this light comes on, it is important to take your vehicle to the local garage to get it checked.
Low Levels
If the coolant level is low or dropping unexpectedly, it is possible there is a leak. The leak may be visible under the vehicle, and you may also be able to smell it. It is important to have your coolant inspected as soon as possible if you notice that the levels have dropped quickly.
Car Heating System Issues
Issues with the car heater system are another possible symptom, for example if cool air comes out of the dashboard vents even when the temperature is set to hot.
Discolouring
If the coolant that has changed colour or become cloudy, it is a sure sign that it needs changing. Over time the additives in the coolant begin to degrade and become contaminated. If the coolant colour changes it shows it is overdue for a coolant flush.
Manually Checking Coolant Levels
- To fill up the coolant level yourself, it is important to ensure that the correct tank is located - adding anti-freeze to another fluid tank such as the brake fluid, could cause serious damage. If in doubt always check with the vehicle’s handbook.
- Once the coolant filler cap has been correctly identified, check the coolant level – this should be in between the minimum and maximum levels on the side of the expansion tank.
- When the engine is cold, remover the filler cap and refill the coolant if necessary. It is important to only do this when the engine is cool as otherwise pressurised hot water may be released and cause a risk of scalding.
- Ensure that you use the correct type of anti-freeze and that different types are not mixed together, as this can lead to corrosion and damage and hinder the performance of the vehicle.
Visit Your Local Garage
If the coolant level is consistently dropping, it is advisable to take the car to your local garage to have it looked at as the coolant level should not be dropping - if it is, it is a sure sign that something is wrong with the vehicle.
