Both local and national UK roads are generally well maintained; according to data from Statista, the UK Government invested over 12 billion pounds into both local and national roads during 2021/22. However, road surfaces inevitably vary in quality - heavy usage, poor weather and general wear and tear can result in a number of road surface defects, some of which are more problematic than others – this can severely impact the driving experience and create numerous hazards.

Potholes
Probably one of the most well known and unwanted of all road surface defects, are potholes. These range in size; some are wider and deeper than others. Potholes have the potential to cause costly damage to the vehicle and if hit at high speeds, can lead to a loss of control of the vehicle and potentially serious accident. They can be difficult to spot, especially in the dark causing the vehicle to skid, swerve or come to a sudden stop in the middle of the road.
Potholes are usually formed by wear to the road surface and water damage. Their growth is accelerated significantly when water accumulates inside the pothole and the surface of the road becomes further degraded by ongoing contact with vehicles. Every year potholes cost motorists thousands of pounds worth of expensive repair work.
Damage Caused By Hitting A Pothole
Tyres
The first point of contact with a pothole are the tyres, this often causes punctures - either a sudden blow out or a slow puncture.
Wheel Alignment
Wheel alignment or tracking as it is also known as, is another commonly cited issue caused by the impact of hitting a pothole. The force can knock the angle and the direction of the wheel, unbalancing the car, and causing the wheels to wear unevenly.
Suspension
Suspension consists of a system of shock absorbers, springs, links etc. that connect to the wheels and absorb shocks and bumps from the contact with the road surface. Hitting a pothole at speed can affect the suspension causing costly damage.
Bumps, Dips and Ruts
Bumps and dips and in the road can be extremely hazardous, especially when hit at high speeds, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Hitting a bump or dip can also damage the suspension and wheel alignment.
Surface Water
Accumulated surface water can be extremely hazardous, it occurs during or after heavy rain when the road surface doesn’t drain adequately. Hitting a large area of surface water at high speeds is especially dangerous because of the risk of aqua planning. Excessive water also causes a lot of spray on the road and consequently, reduced visibility.
Road Surface Type
The type of surface used on a road can make a big difference to the driving experience, tarmac roads generally create a much smoother ride, by comparison concrete roads are very noisy and more slippery when wet.
Rocks and Debris
Although not a road surface defect, debris such as rubbish or from falling rocks, that are not properly secured, can cause serious hazards. Falling rocks can cause potentially fatal accidents if they strike passing cars and may also cause vehicles to swerve or brake suddenly. Another problematic issue is debris left on the road – this can take many forms, rocks, bricks glass, nails, splinters etc. causing punctures and damage to the tyres and underside of the vehicle, as well as accidents as drivers swerve to avoid hitting them.
Lack of Road Markings
Roads without clear line markings and cats’ eyes are more difficult and tiring to navigate especially in areas of heavy traffic, at night or during times of poor visibility.
Overgrown Vegetation
A more common sight in rural areas, vegetation hanging or growing into the road can seriously impede vision, especially at bends.
