Engine oil is essential to any diesel or petrol engine car. It serves to lubricate the components of the engine and to ensure that it runs smoothly, keeping adequate amounts of oil in the engine prevents the parts from grinding together. If the engine oil pressure light comes on when you are driving, this should not be ignored. It could potentially cause engine failure, or in the worst-case scenario, result in a dangerous crash.
Why Has the Low Oil Pressure Light Switched On?
There are several potential causes as to why the oil pressure light could have switched on. Here are some of the most likely causes:
An Oil Leak
The oil pan is located at the bottom of the engine – it is the reservoir for oil that gets pumped through the engine to lubricate, clean and cool the moving parts. When the engine is not running, the oil accumulates in the oil pan. A leak in the oil pan can cause a drop in oil pressure, this will likely be noticeable on the underneath of the vehicle.
A Faulty Sensor
The oil pressure sensor is designed to check when the oil pressure in the vehicle has dropped, this triggers a warning light to alert the driver to the issue. Sometimes however, it is the oil pressure sensor itself that is faulty rather than the oil level and the warning light may be coming on with no apparent reason.
The Wrong Oil
Using the wrong oil or not enough oil can lead to issues with oil pressure. It is essential to buy the correct grade oil with the right viscosity and density that works best for the engine of your car and to ensure it is topped up to the right amount.
Faulty Oil Filter
The oil filter serves to prevent any particles of dust and debris in the oil from entering the engine. If the filter is faulty or clogged it will not allow the oil to circulate properly and can potentially let dirt and debris into the engine.
Oil Pump Malfunction
The oil pump ensures that the oil moves throughout the engine systems as it should do. If the oil pump is malfunctioning, it may lead to a reduction in pressure and let bubbles into the oil.
Old Oil
Over time the oil breaks down leading to reduced lubricating capacities. If the oil has darkened it is most likely that it will need changing.
What Does Low Oil Pressure Do to The Car?
Low oil pressure will typically affect the performance of the vehicle as the functionality of the engine will be reduced. Another indication that the oil pressure could be low, are unusual noises or smells. The smell of burning oil is typically an indication that the car is running out of oil and needs more and if a car makes any type of unusual noise, it is a good idea to get this investigated by checking the oil immediately and taking the car to the local garage.
