Brake pads wear out. It's inevitable physics - friction material disappears as heat every time you stop. Most drivers ignore the early warnings until their car starts making grinding noises when braking at low and high speeds.

The principle is simple: pads squeeze against metal discs, converting your car's momentum into heat that dissipates harmlessly. Once the friction material disappears completely, metal backing plates grind directly against the discs.

When replacement becomes unavoidable

Brake pads measuring 3 millimetres or less have reached the end of their useful life. Below this thickness, they can't handle the heat generated during heavy braking. The result? Brakes fade when you need stopping power most, plus potential damage to your brake discs.

If pad thickness drops to 1.5mm or below, the MOT test will fail your car, but waiting this long is dangerous. As pads wear thin, your stopping distances increase dramatically, turning minor incidents into major crashes.

During routine servicing, mechanics check both sides of each pad. Uneven wear often reveals bigger problems: seized brake components, worn suspension parts, or alignment issues that need addressing alongside pad replacement.

Warning signs worth heeding

  • Squealing or grinding noises: High-pitched squealing comes from wear indicators, deliberately annoying metal tabs that scrape against the disc when pad material runs low. Ignore this warning, and you'll hear grinding instead.
  • Longer stopping distances: When you need more pedal pressure or travel to achieve the same braking force, pad material has worn beyond adequate levels.
  • Overactive ABS: Your anti-lock system shouldn't trigger during gentle braking on dry roads. Frequent activation suggests inconsistent pad contact with the discs.
  • Vehicle pulling to the side when braking: Uneven pad wear between left and right wheels creates imbalanced braking forces, pulling your car off course.

How to replace brake pads

The process to replace brake pads goes like this:

Specify the correct replacement parts

Online registration checkers that use your number plate provide quick answers, but garages and dealerships offer more reliable identification.

Garages can access comprehensive parts databases and account for modifications (such as big brake disc kits) that might affect brake specifications.

Remove the wheel

Park on level ground and engage the handbrake. Loosen the wheel nuts while the wheel supports the car's weight. Once raised, they'll spin freely.

Jack up the car at the manufacturer's lifting points and immediately support it with axle stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Remove the wheel nuts and lift the wheel clear.

Remove the old pads and callipers

The brake calliper bolts to the steering knuckle with bolts accessible from behind. Remove the lower bolt first so the calliper can swing up on the upper bolt like a hinge, exposing the brake pads. 

Some jobs require calliper removal, which means disconnecting the brake line. Work carefully to avoid air entering the lines or contaminating the brake fluid.

Pull the worn pads from their carrier, remembering how they fit. Clean away brake dust and debris, as this stuff can be harmful if inhaled and reduces new pad performance.

Install new pads and callipers

Slot new pads into the carrier the same way the old ones came out. The friction material must face the disc correctly, or you'll have no brakes. 

Apply thin coats of high-temperature grease to pad backing plates and contact points because this prevents squealing without contaminating friction surfaces.

New pads are thicker than worn ones, so you must compress the calliper piston to make room. Use proper tools for this job and watch the brake fluid reservoir since pushing the pistons back forces fluid upward. 

Swing the calliper back down over the new pads and bolt it securely. Torque specifications matter here. Too loose and the calliper moves, too tight and you strip threads.

Bed in the new brakes

New pads need breaking in to work correctly. Start with gentle stops from 30mph, letting components cool between applications. Avoid reaching a complete standstill if possible because this can create uneven material transfer and cause juddering.

Build up braking force gradually over the first 200 miles. Heavy braking too early can glaze pad surfaces, permanently reducing their effectiveness. Proper bedding creates an even layer of pad material on the disc surface, maximising friction and longevity.
